A fascinating tour unveiling the history of a former DMZ site and one of Vietnam's most impressive natural wonders, the Phong Nha Caves. After arriving in Dong Hoi you take a 1 hour drive to Phong Nha National Park before boarding a private boat for the 1.5km cruise down the Son River to the mouth of the cave. On entering the cave you will see the impressive stalactites and stalagmites that have formed over the years. The area has numerous grottoes and caves and so far only 20 caves with a total length of 70 km have been surveyed. Some of those caves found are large enough to house skyscrapers. After exploring the cave, the afternoon and evening is at your leisure to wander through Dong Hoi and enjoy its quiet pace of life.
Your second day is spent learning and experiencing life in the DMZ area of Vinh Moc. Travelling from Dong Hoi, you will pass Cua Tung Beach before arriving at Ving Moc, an area that suffered heavy bombing. In order to escape the bombardment villagers constructed approximately 2.8 km of underground tunnels which they used as a refuge to survive the bombings. Three hundred people lived intermittently in the tunnels from 1966 to 1971. From here we cross over the Ben Hai River and enjoy a local style lunch before continuing to the coast to visit Quang Tri Citadel and La Vang Cathedral.
Arrive at Dong Hoi airport, meet your guide and be transferred to your hotel.
In the afternoon, start your tour to visit Phong NHa Park. You have 2 options :
- Phong Nha Cave and Tram village
- Paradise Cave
Option1:
Upon arrive in Phong Nha Park, get on your private boat for the 2.5 km cruise down the Son River to the mouth of the cave then reach 'Cave of Teeth and Wind' and enter the mystical tunnels to see the amazing giant stalactites and stalagmites. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is considered as one of the world's two largest limestone regions and is the oldest major karst in Asia. There are numerous caves and grottoes and some of 20 caves with a total length of 70 km have been surveyed.
After Phong Nha Cave, visit Tram village, an old village located between Chay river and Son river, visit their old houses and paddies rice fields. You will cross the river by boat after Tram village to reach Me village, a small farming village is leaning back on limestone mountains Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a traditional village where you can enjoy the daily life of local people, the ever green rice fields and the local ferry and fishing on Son River. Come to visit some Ruong Houses - the traditional house made by wood, Watch people making Vietnamese rice wine and try the wine in wooden house.
Option 2:
Upon arrive in Phong Nha Park, drive to Paradise Cave, opened to the public in 2010,some claim that it is one of the most beautiful caves in the world Climb 500 stairs up to entrance of cave then another 100-200 stairs down inside to see the Stunning, tastefully lit cave features along 1.1 km of new (spring 2011) wooden pathways which made to protect and preserve the fragile cave formations. This walkway cross through the enormous, well lighted cave. Transfer back to Dong Hoi. Overnight in Dong Hoi.
Note: The Phong Nha National Park entrance is located 50 minute-drive from Dong Hoi.
