Excursing the Mekong River via a river cruise. Chance to explore the so-called “4000 Islands” as the Southern part of Laos. Enjoy the beautiful time-lapse at the dock at its best and pay homage to the ancient temples as well as wandering around the local villages.
Pakse – Champasak (30 km): 1.5 hour by boat
Khone Phapheng – Khong Island (25 km): 2 hours by boat
From Pakse going to see the marvelous falls of Khone Phapheng with two-hour drive. It is the highest as well as the most spectacular waterfalls of Laos in which can be seen from a wooden-built hut. Move on to visit Xieng Di – the fishing village for lunch at a local restaurant. Then, en route to Khong Island by boarding a longtailed boat.
On the way, there are Don Det and Don Khone, two of the very undeveloped islands, located on the border of Strung Treng province in Cambodia and Laos. In the past, in order to cross the waterfalls it happened to have a railway bridge in which was built by the French and nowadays has contributed to the unique ambience of the place.
After exploring these islands, another longtailed boat is ready for boarding to the village of Ban Veuthong, Khong Island. Last stop the day is Si Phan Don as known as 4000 Islands. This region is known for home to thousands of islands surrounded by cascades and rapids, an astounding spot indeed. Experience the magnificent views and superb dinner while cruising through such mesmerizing landscapes. Overnight on board.
4000 islands – Houay Tomo (80 km): 4 hours by boat
Breakfast on board is ready to be served while heading to Ban Dua Tae, the first stop of the day. Passing Don Xai island to keep on cruising to the North, into the area of countless islands surrounding.
Enjoy a hearty lunch served on board whilst on the way sailing to Don Daeng island. Off board to explore the village of Houay Tomo and walk for a few minutes to the mysterious forest temple – Oum Muang. This place is famous for its Pre-Angkorian temple construction style as well as represents the prosperous history of Southern Laos.
Last activity of the day happens to be reboarding the boat and enjoying the beautiful sunset view over the waters before dining on cruise. Overnight on board.
Wat Phou – Champasak (8 km): 15 min
Champasak – Pakse (30 km): 1 hour
Cruise onwards to north of Ban Wat Luang Kao along the Mekong River to visit the 10th century pre-Angkorian temple of Wat Phou.
Wat Phou is a spectacular pre-Angkorian temple, which was once famous as the most important center in the region for its economic and political development. This is indeed a UNESCO World-Heritage site. Opportunity to discover each of its three various levels.
Enjoy lunch on board after the tour from Wat Phou, before heading back to mainland and disembark at Champasak.
Experience some samples of French colonial building while in Champasak and then leave to return to Pakse for arriving around 16:00.
